Summary
The Global Forum rated Botswana overall Partially Compliant with the international standard on transparency and exchange of information (EOI) on requests handled over the period from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017. Since its last report in 2016, Botswana has taken measures to address some of the deficiencies identified. Some important challenges remain, in particular to ensure the availability of accounting information, as well as taking steps to ensure the availability of beneficial ownership information. Botswana should also implement effective supervisory programmes to ensure these types of information are kept in practice and monitor the implementation of recently enacted laws (e.g. on transparency of trusts). Finally, Botswana has very little experience in actual exchange of information, since it received only 4 requests during the period reviewed. Appropriate organisational processes and resources remain to be put in place in order to respond to EOI requests in a timely manner.
