The economies of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) have been negatively affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Government officials, policy makers and experts discussed on 25 June priority steps for building back greener in the region. The discussion was based on the OECD policy brief “COVID-19 and Greening the Economies of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia”.

Within the EU Green Week, EU4Environment is organising a virtual event “Towards Zero Pollution in the Eastern Partnership countries”. This regional conference will review progress in addressing environmental challenges in the region, demonstrate the success stories and best practices to decrease pollution, and discuss the ways how to address remaining challenges, including those stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 20 May 2021, high-level representatives from the EU, the OECD and OGP discussed how to effectively advance necessary reforms in the Eastern Partnership countries. The rule of law, a fair justice system, open civic space and good governance are essential for a fair and sustainable socio-economic recovery from the COVID-19.

This policy paper analyses measures related to COVID-19 in 11 EECCA countries based on their potential to advance the transition to a greener, climate-resilient and low-carbon economy. Recommendations suggest ways to ensure that governments align efforts to support economic recovery with their objectives on climate change, biodiversity and wider environmental protection.

The EU-funded “EU4Environment” Programme, launched in 2019, helps six Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, preserve their natural capital and increase people’s environmental well-being. It supports environment-related actions, demonstrating and unlocking opportunities for greener growth, and setting mechanisms to better manage environmental risks and impacts.
