The implementation of the Fragile States Principles (FSPs) is monitored through a voluntary survey which relies on national consultations. The survey is meant to take stock of international engagement and its impact in participating countries.

Co-ordination with the Paris Declaration monitoring survey
The Fragile States Principles are complementary to the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, which notes the need to adapt and apply aid effectiveness principles to differing country situations, particularly fragile states. They also reach beyond aid effectiveness issues to include substantive policy themes such as security, governance and policy coherence.
The monitoring surveys for the Paris Declaration and the Fragile States Principles are closely co-ordinated to build synergies and minimise the burden on participating countries. As such, the 2011 FSP Survey coincides with the third round of the Paris Declaration Monitoring Survey. The OECD-DAC Working Party on Aid Effectiveness has established a forum to help co-ordinate these two processes. With the exception of Timor-Leste, all participating countries of the 2009 FSP Survey also participated in the Paris Declaration Monitoring Survey.

Good practice cases
In preparation for the 2011 round of the FSP Survey, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released a paper that illustrates how the Fragile States Principles can be supported through practical programming approaches. Click here to read the full report (pdf, 664.2 kB).
