The OECD Development Centre, together with the Ministry of Grassroots Development, Crafts, Youth, and Youth Employment (MDBAJEJ) and the Delegation of the European Union to Togo organised an event in Lomé on 14 March 2018 to present the key findings and recommendations of the Youth Well-being Policy Review of Togo and to develop a roadmap identifying the key actions needed to implement the recommendations of the study.
The Youth Well-being Policy Review of Togo study is part of the OECD Development Centre’s Youth Inclusion Project, co-financed by the European Union. The analysis uses a multidimensional approach to look at various dimensions of well-being affecting young people and gives recommendations for the formulation of public policies in favour of youth and for government action.
The event was opened by welcoming and introductory remarks by Mr Octave Nicoué Broohm, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr Patrick Daté Tevi-Benissan, Secretary General of the Presidency, Ms Cristina Martins Barreira, Head and Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union in Togo, and Ms Rose Akuitse, Head of Central Management Unit of the OECD Development Centre. The Mr. Victor G. Yawotse Vovor, Head of Cabinet of MDBAJEJ, and Mr. Isselmou Bokhary, Resident Representative of (UNICEF in Togo, as well as numerous national media, attended the event.
During his opening speech, Mr Broohm highlighted that the government's vision for the period up to 2030 is to make young Togolese autonomous, responsible and equal participants in national development. He also said: "The conclusions of the report have attracted particular attention from the highest authorities in the country who have urged the Ministers concerned to assume ownership of the recommendations of the report ".
Mr Pablo Syárez Robles, author of the report and Economist at the OECD Development Centre, presented the main findings, conclusions and recommendations of the report and emphasized the need to improve the effectiveness of government action for young people to best meet their needs.
In order to promote knowledge sharing and mutual learning between countries of the region, the workshop was attended by the Ministry for the Promotion of Youth, Youth Employment and Civic Service of Côte Ivory. The Ministry shared the Ivorian experience by presenting the recently adopted National Youth Policy (NPC) 2016-2020.
